Natural Oils for Hair Care: A Comparative Guide

Marcus PhamJanuary 30, 20249 min read

Choosing the right carrier oil for hair care depends on the hair type, desired sensory profile, and functional benefits needed. Here's our comparison of 8 key cosmetic oils.

Penetrating Oils (small molecules, low MW)

Coconut Oil — rich in lauric acid, penetrates hair cortex, reduces protein loss. Marula Oil — lightweight, fast-absorbing, excellent for frizz control.

Coating Oils (larger molecules, seal cuticle)

Castor Oil — thick, high in ricinoleic acid, adds shine and thickness. Argan Oil — balanced, rich in Vitamin E and oleic acid.

Scalp-Focused Oils

Rosehip Oil — high linoleic acid, ideal for dry or sensitive scalps. Jojoba Oil — technically a liquid wax, mimics sebum, non-comedogenic.

Super helpful guide! I was always confused about HLB values and this explained it perfectly. Already applied it to my moisturizer formula.

Would love to see a follow-up article on troubleshooting emulsion separation. Great content overall.
